THE SUMMIT IS IN SIGHT: DEVELOPING A DIGITAL PRODUCT FOR THE FIRST TIME
We are reaching the summit of the digital product mountain. If you’ve been following along on this journey, then you know I am in the final weeks of developing my first digital product: a folder filled with over 200 outdoor inspired sound effects.
When I first started this project, I feel like I was a different human being. Life has certainly changed a lot in just three weeks, but this steady climb of building something new has kept winding forward. It’s been strenuous, to the say the least, with a lot of bumps and learning curves.
But what am I if not growing?
This past week I finished editing and exporting all my sound effects and now I have this massive, organized folder of sounds that I get to market to the world.
So, how do we do that?
STEP ONE: THE LANDING PAGE
I have decided that I am going to sell my product on Gumroad since a few aspiring field recorders recommended it. I have never sold any products in general, never mind a digital product, so I needed to figure out where to start.
I set up my Gumroad account and did some extensive research on other sound effect products on the site. One thing became abundantly clear, I needed to showcase some of my sounds to the audience, so they knew what they were buying.
In order to do this, I grabbed 10 of my best sounds I wanted to feature. Next, I found some really great stock images that best represent that sound. There are plenty of YouTube videos that use this same tactic to market sound effects. This will allow the potential customers to hear the sounds with the correlating images.
Whenever I am looking for a product the first thing I notice is the image. Similar to YouTube, I click videos based on their thumbnails. It’s important my images and sounds immediately hook the audience and make them want to own what I’ve created. I think this will be the best way to set up my landing page.
I will include a YouTube video in the description with the sound/image combination since Gumroad recommends keeping full length videos within the description rather than within in the cover. The cover will be focused on drawing people’s attention, and the description will provide the customers with further details.
STEP TWO: THE HOW TO
Along with the images and sound, I also will be creating a one-sheet that shows the buyer how to access the media they are purchasing.
As a video editor who would be someone purchasing this content, I know I wouldn’t want to waste my time trying to understand the file structures or how to download the SFX. I would appreciate a quick and comprehensive tutorial on how to access the files.
At first, I thought of creating a video for this feature, but after discussing with friends in the TV industry, most of them don’t want to sit through a video when they can quickly skim a document.
A few industry friends mentioned they already know how to access media files and a quick one-sheet for any personalized labels would make all the difference. That feedback was extremely helpful in building out my landing page.
STEP THREE: SOCIAL MEDIA
The last piece to this puzzle is one of the biggest. Social media is the best way to market products in 2026.
The idea is to create a funnel of content that ultimately ends in the consumer buying the product. This can be done in many ways, but my favorite and the one I find most effective is through YouTube shorts and TikTok.
Currently, I have TikTok and YouTube pages where I post shorts with very specific themes. I think it would work well with my brand to create a similar style VO video about the hike we went on to capture the sound for this project. This would create a natural flow to the landing page without feeling like I was simply marketing my product.
I wrote a script with this theme in mind. I captured a bunch of behind the scenes footage for this project which works well in social format. I think these videos will drive people to my landing page and ultimately get them to buy the product.
I can also post this as a reel to Instagram and create a story with the link to my Gumroad site embedded. This should get even more eyes on my product!
WHAT’S NEXT?
With all these steps laid out, I think I am ready to begin the packaging and marketing phase this week. My folder is organized exactly how I want it and zipped up ready for delivery. Now it’s time to put everything together and truly reach the summit. Hopefully we can catch the sunset from the top!
